Ashwagandha  is commonly known as winter cherry or Indian ginseng. Recognised as an important medicinal plant in traditional medicine. In  Sanskrit  “ashwa” means horse and “gandha” meaning smell. ASHWAGANDHA  the name was given to this plant due to the smell of the roots being like that of a  sweating horse.

There is no reference about it in Vedas, however in Ayurvedic classic literature like Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhatta, there is reference to the properties, action and therapeutic uses of Ashwagandha in their works. Ashwagandha was first mentioned by sage Punarvasu Atreya over 4000 years ago.

It is a small woody shrub grows not  more than 1.5 m above the ground, with elliptical green leaves and small five petal flower. The seeds are red in colour. The plant doesn't need much attention or irrigation, surviving in parched conditions where most other vegetation does not survive .

Most parts of the plant are used in traditional medicine, including the leaves, bark and root.
